VOSLOORUS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME, VOSLOORUS TOWNSHIP, GAUTENG
The project started in 2011 and at present around 100 children are coached and mentored on a weekly basis with tennis each afternoon and Saturday mornings. Since inception, around 250 children have benefited from this initiative with some having gone on to represent the province at inter provincial tournaments. This year a record was set when four children were chosen. Head Coach Michael Lelosa visits the four local schools to canvas children and now, with the tennis club having been affiliated to Tennis SA and a club formed, more families are attending and bringing their children. Lockdown hampered the programme but since September 2020 children have been entered into local events which now allow spectators. Life Skills Days will be re-introduced once lockdown restrictions are lifted.

KENTON JUNIOR TENNIS PROGRAMME, KENTON-ON-SEA, EASTERN CAPE
The programme in the small coastal town of Kenton-on-Sea and its neighbouring Township, Ekuphumleni, teaches tennis and life skills to school children in an environment rife with unemployment, drugs and alcohol. A “future generation” group has been started at the primary school and for those children too young to undertake the walk to the courts just yet, the community hall or a flat area next to the school will be used. The programme has also established a close relationship with the local Kenton Tennis Club which provides its facilities free of charge. Despite Covid-19, 2021 is proving to be exciting with numbers of older children returning to or starting the programme increasing to more than twice that of 2019 and 2020.

Newbees fare well in their first tournament

Gauteng East again hosted a one-day tournament for those players who, as yet, are not up to participating in the main stream Tennis SA sanctioned events. It is a breeding ground for our future stars and gives us the opportunity to “blood” the younger players into tournament play.

First Tournament of the year

Despite the fact that spectators are still not allowed to attend tennis events, Gauteng East staged their first tournament of the year. We again supported this initiative with six players taking part and one of them experiencing tournament play for the first time.

VOSLOORUS PLAYERS SET NEW RECORD.

After the trials at the Gauteng East headquarters, four of our players were chosen to represent the province in the forthcoming SA Schools inter provincial tournament. Over the years we have regularly had one or two players chosen but this is the first time that more than two have been selected.

Final tournament of the year

Although the year has been disrupted due to the pandemic, Gauteng East Tennis Association managed to squeeze in another one day event for the up and coming players with a doubles competition on 6 December.

Play and Stay for the beginners

In view of the number of younger and newer players that have come along, it was decided to hold an informal Play and Stay morning at Vosloorus. There is a resurgence of young and in some cases very young, players coming along and this idea was an excellent way to introduce them to the game of tennis.

Success for Vosloorus players

This year as we all know has not been a normal year. Usually our junior provincial teams will take part in the National inter provincial tournament and also possibly have friendly matches against those provinces close to Gauteng.
